How to keep it
Money – how to keep it
This is perhaps the most difficult aspect creating wealth from the money you earn whether it is from your job, your business or from state and private benefits.
Of course, the biggest destroyer of the income you earn is the taxman.
In a situation where you work for a company on a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) basis, which the vast majority of people in Ireland do, the taxman gets at your pay packet before it arrives in your pocket or your bank account. You have no choice in the matter. The Irish Revenue Commissioners will extract their generous share from your employer before it ever reaches you.
In the case of self-employed people, they have a little more control over their tax affairs oy in the sense of reporting it and paying it to the Revenue under what is called Self- Assessment. Undoubtedly, they also have a somewhat more generous regime in what they are allowed to claim in expenses making up a bit for the insecurity of self-employment.
